Google’s GetMo campaign was launched yesterday in London and we were delighted to be a part of this exciting initiative, aimed at getting businesses mobile, something that we believe in passionately. We are one of just 13 partners chosen by Google for the initiative.

The Guardian covered the launch in an article on their mobile blog and we’ve included some excerpts from their article below:

“Google wants British businesses to put more thought into their mobile web strategies, and has launched a UK scheme called GetMo to encourage them.

The GetMo website offers a tool for companies to see how their current website looks on a mobile phone, while providing tips on how to build a more effective mobile site, and information on mobile consumer trends.

The scheme is a UK extension of the GoMo initiative that Google launched in the US in November 2011. It also follows the Google Sites Mobile Landing Pages (Google Mobilize for short) scheme from June 2011, which provided small and medium-sized British businesses with templates for their mobile landing pages.

“As the smartphone explosion continues, more consumers are looking to engage with brands by searching for them on their mobile phone. Yet the majority of businesses don’t have mobile sites or a mobile strategy for connecting with them,” says Google’s director of mobile advertising for Europe Ian Carrington.

“Businesses need to get mobile in order to provide a positive user experience for their customers. At the moment, business are not keeping up with consumers.”

Google cites stats from Ipsos CT showing that 93% of smartphone owners in the UK use their handsets to access the web every day, with 84% looking for local information.

One of Google’s partners in GetMo is mobile commerce firm The MoBank Group, which works with businesses to add shopping features on their mobile sites.

“Statistics show that over 15% of all online traffic is now coming from mobile, therefore retailers that use websites which don’t adequately support mobile transactions are losing the equivalent to one day of business per week,” says its chief executive Dominic Keen.”

According to their LinkedIn page, “Labtrip is a Start-up Company that offers tourist innovative solutions based on mobile apps. Labtrip provides customized & intelligent city guides for the main European cities. The company is headquartered in Barcelona’s Technova Park.” We caught up with them to find out about their company, their plans, and their views on the mobile landscape.

Can you tell us about Labtrip, and the background of some of your key personnel?

Labtrip is a startup located in Barcelona that offers a technological and innovative solution for weekend breaks by web and mobile apps (iPhone, iPad and Android).

It’s a complete and practical way of making personalized travel guides. Labtrip integrates, simplifies and provides quality to the planning of short trips around European capitals.

Labtrip was founded by two young entrepreneurs: Jordi Gàmez and Demis Torres. After many years working in big companies they gathered experience in the field of financial consultancy such as Forensic and M&A and they decided to undertake a personal project.

The Labtrip founders

Tell us about your products and how they are going to change travel?

Labtrip is available by web (www.labtrip.com) and mobile devices. Apart from the personalized travel guides that can be done by the users, Labtrip offers a new concept of travel guide, the Topic Guides. These Labtrip thematic guides give an especially detialed overview of a city with titles such as Paris with kids, London for book fans or Soviet Berlin at an affordable price (£1,49)

Apart from the web and apps for travelers, Labtrip also offers a product for hotels. Hotel by Labtrip includes all the Labtrip possibilities of the app in a “white label” format, adjusting it to the look & feel of each hotel.

Labtrip for iPhone

What role do you think that mobile can and will play in travel?

Mobile nowadays is playing a very important role in travel. The impact of the mobile technology is basic at the present moment in the tourism field as it offers a direct interaction between the traveler and the environment. The travelling experience becomes complete with the impact of the mobile technologies. Geolocation, AR or the m-commerce are some of the most important steps forward in this field. This importance of technology in tourism will grow for sure in the future years.

You’re based in Barcelona. Could you give us an overview of the mobile technology scene there?

The mobile technology in Barcelona is living a moment of unstoppable growth and development. There are many startups in this field which are living a magnificent business moment. Part of this success comes from the 22@ neighborhood, the area in the city which is becoming the high tech hub of Barcelona.

Labtrip for iPad

What young Spanish mobile companies, Labtrip aside, do you tip to make it big?

There are many of them as there is a lot of talent in this field but we would mention Privalia, a private shopping club online and Teambox that joins collaboration tools with online project managing. Apart from those, there are many companies working on app games which are very good professionals and we are sure that will have a promising future.

Labtrip is free for consumers (which is great!). What is your business model?

Labtrip has a freemium business model. The travelers can use the web and apps for free and make their personalized guides without spending money however there are some payment complements such as thematic guides. These Topic Guides can be purchased by the users at an affordable price (£1,49).

Additionally, Labtrip gets commissions from the hotel and restaurant booking done through its platforms and also from the ticket sales.

You provide solutions for both iPhone/iPad and Android. What is your view on the strengths and weaknesses of each platform?

From one side, Android has a huge market and is growing so fast. Google’s open-source is very positive, as the design possibilities are endless.

On the other side, due to this freedom, the adjustment to the different devices can bring difficulties. Another weakness of Android is the design, which is not as polished as we would like.

iOS has a very faithful market, which is both a good and a bad point, as it can limit the market. The design and usability of the iPhone is much better than the Android although the framework is very limited.

What is 2012 going to bring for Labtrip?

Labtrip will consolidate its presence in Europe during 2012 and at the end of the year will expand to the main cities in the USA.

What has been the most exciting mobile development in 2011?

There have been many interesting mobile developments this year like the rocket growth of the e-commerce and the expansion of the freemium business model in success cases like Spotify.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and about Simon Kucher & Partners, the organisation you work for?

Simon-Kucher & Partners is a global strategy and marketing consultancy with 23 offices worldwide. The Economist has referred to us as, “The world’s leading pricing consultancy”, and we are experts at finding and optimising revenue sources. We work in all industries and I lead the UK Banking team. Our clients include many well known brands such as HSBC, Barclays and Deutsche Bank.

You’ve recently released a report on mobile payments. Can you outline some of the key findings?

Ben Snowman

Simon-Kucher conducted a customer Discovery Panel survey in July 2011 on mobile payments to see which types of mobile payment are attractive to customers and, importantly, whether they would be willing to pay a fee in order to make payments using their mobiles. Given that it was a Discovery Panel, it was designed to open the debate. As I always say, these panels are indicative, not authoritative. There were two headlines. Firstly, there is a much greater willingness to try mobile payments with customers who have smart phones. Secondly, customers would prefer to pay a fixed fee to load a wallet, then make unlimited payments until the funds had expired. This was the preferred pricing metric for 4 of the 5 mobile payments investigated.

We used an open question pricing methodology with our 316 respondents. The methodology was developed in 1976 and is a recognised and systematic way of identifying pricing corridors. It is not suitable for price setting in the market – rather, it gives a range (or corridor) within which you would start using more robust methods to pin-point price levels. This method serves the purpose of the Discovery Panels perfectly as it does not prejudice results with pre-conceived hypotheses of price levels.

An interesting point is that we, VocaLink and Alcatel Lucient all identify the fact that there is a willingness to pay for mobile payments. This is of no surprise given that companies like PayPal make a living this way (they estimate that they will transact $3bn in mPayments this year). Currently, banks give mobile services away for free and are not tapping into customers’ willingness to pay. Is this a missed revenue opportunity?

What are consumers most excited about in the field of mobile commerce and payments?

If you look at the results of our Discovery Panel, customers are most excited about NFC mobile payments. This is not surprising given the buzz surrounding the Olympics and all the rumours about the latest iPhone that (eventually did not) have NFC capabilities. However, 2012 will probably be the year when mobile NFC becomes a mass offering, giving customers exactly what excites them most.

What is your view on the future of mobile technology in financial services?

Mobile banking can be split into three areas: 1) informational services, 2) transactional services and 3) interactive services. In terms of app-based mobile banking, informational services are around and serving basic customer needs. We have research to demonstrate that these core services are the most important from a mobile banking offering. Transactional services are in the midst of developing – payments is the obvious choice of service here. Interactive services, however, are only just starting to emerge. These would include location based confirmations for transactions eg. when a payment goes out of an account, an alert flashes and the customer is requested to confirm that the transaction is legitimate. Some of the factors that would trigger the alert would be location of payee and payer, value of the transaction, history of similar transactions etc. Our research shows that fraud and security are the top concerns of customers and there is a clear opportunity to address this need using technology. Mobile brings location into the game and people expect multi-way, frequent interactions with brands. The technology is out there, it’s just not reached the customer yet…but that’s just a matter of time.

What is your view on who is finally going to impose themselves on the mobile wallet and payments space out of the major players?

You can’t mention mobile wallets without mentioning PayPal. You can’t talk about the UK mobile banking market without mentioning Monitise and RBS. But there is a big distinction between mobile banking and mobile payments and the industry is still finding its feet. The telecoms companies are actively moving into this space, post-Payment Services Directive and O2 has selected Mobinetic to build their wallet. The big banks are still suffering, reputationally, from the backlash of the credit crisis and there is an opportunity for a new brand to become the equivalent of PayPal for banking. This is where a brand like MoBank could make real headway into the UK market – and possibly overseas too.

Frogtek is “a for-profit social venture dedicated to creating business tools for micro-entrepreneurs in emerging markets.” We caught up with their CTO, Guillermo Caudevilla, to find out about the company, and the sector that they work in.

Can you tell us about Frogtek, and your key product?

Micro-entrepreneurs such as shopkeepers rarely keep detailed accounting records, since there are no affordable tools designed for their needs. This results in inefficient operations, often leading to bankruptcy, and also raises their borrowing costs. As shopkeepers become agents in mobile payment networks, they need intuitive interfaces to sell the growing range of electronic products and services.

For consumer packaged goods companies (CPGs) and microfinance institutions (MFIs), poor record-keeping means they have little information about their customer and thereby are forced to operate sub-optimally in an opaque market.

TiendaTek, our main product in Frogtek, is a simple and intuitive accounting and inventory management application that allows a shopkeeper to use a smartphone/tablet with a bar-code reader as a point-of-sale device (total hardware cost $250). The data gathered is uploaded to Frogtek servers for backup, analysis, and sale to third parties. The shopkeeper receives education and recommendations to fully benefit from the newfound information. And TiendaTek integrates with mobile payments platforms that let shopkeepers increase revenues by selling mobile minutes and other digital services. In sum, TiendaTek is a disruptive product that connects the shopkeepers to their funders and suppliers while allowing the former to improve their businesses.

You describe your products as aimed at ‘The Base of the Pyramid’ – can you explain this strategy, and your views on how mobile can help this group?

In the area of retail the stores that are feeding more than 4 billion people in underdeveloped and developing countries do not have any technology to run their businesses. This lack of technology is a burden for these small businesses, but also a major operational problem for large companies operating in these markets. In addition the end consumer is the one who ends up paying the price, receiving a poor service and paying more for products they could get cheaper. This is a huge market that can and should use new technologies to improve its operations.

The mobile phone penetration in these markets is enormous. Few people can afford a PC but everyone has a mobile device. The phone is already being used for many interesting applications that really change people’s lives … electronic money transfers (M-PESA), available running water notices vía NextDrop, fraudulent medicines prevention with m-pedigree. These and many other applications really help change the lives of people in areas that are taken for granted in the developed world.

Tienda Tek Product Page

Can you tell us a bit about your team and the background of some of your key personnel?

Our team consists now of 20 people, including David del Ser, our CEO and founder. Prior to founding Frogtek David worked for five years designing mobile applications in Vodafone’s Research & Development group in Spain in partnership with companies such as Nokia, Adobe and Ericsson. David also founded Microlumbia, a student-run fund that provides investment and pro bono consulting services to microfinance institutions around the world.

Another co-founder is Mark Pedersen, (Also COO and CFO). Prior to joining Frogtek Mark was a management consultant for Monitor Group where he worked with leading Fortune 500 companies on a wide range of growth strategy projects in the pharmaceutical, retail, and consumer packaged goods sectors. Mark has also worked in several Latin America countries including Nicaragua where he helped to launch a micro-venture capital fund that invests in early-stage ventures.

I am Guillermo Caudevilla, CTO. Prior to joining Frogtek I worked for over six years in the Research & Development department at Vodafone Group where I was responsible for the design, implementation and deployment of prototypes, technology creation and standards contribution within the Web and mobile browser evolution areas.

What global regions do you think are best suited to your products and why?

Frogtek started in Latin America partly because of cultural affinities, in part because our project began to germinate in Colombia with the Women World Bank. We think, however, that the shopkeepers around the world face the same challenges and our solution (with appropriate changes) may help them improve their management and make more money. We do not see limits on our market but we still have long way to go in Mexico and Colombia.

Tienda Tek Dashboard

Your current products work on ‘Android based Google phones’. Why did you choose that platform in particular, and are you keen to work with other platforms in the future?

At the moment our reference and unique platform is Android, no short-term plans to change that. When we made the decision in 2008 we analized the trade offs between a usable and friendly interface along with the easeness to program and low cost device availability. Android offered a compelling user experience in the short-term with the promise of low cost devices in the medium-term. Fortunately it seems that time is giving us reason and, 3 years later, Android is available on many phones, and some of them begin to be truly affordable for our customers. Moreover Android is also providing support on a platform we did not expect in 2008, tablets, and now we see those as a great opportunity for our solution.

You’re described as a Spanish-American start up. Could you give us an overview of the Spanish mobile technology scene?

The crisis in Spain is being especially cruel, with unemployment rates of over about 20% in general and more than 40% for young people. But the crisis also creates opportunities, and maybe that’s why we’re seeing small start-ups being born in different cities of Spain. It is also interesting to see how different initiatives around the world of software (Agile Spain) show up or how Technology Parks spread throughout the Spanish territory (as Walqa, in a little town as Huesca, where our offices are located) are emerging and gaining momentum. There is still a long way to go for Spain to catch up with other countries in regard to mobile technologies. We believe that the successes (small and large) for Spanish newborn companies can help encourage people and therefore this industry can flourish in our country.

What is your vision for how mobile can help social enterprises and the charitable sector?

Technology is a tool. Technology helps solving problems. It helps traditional enterprises or social, for-profits or non-profits. The big difference is that social enterprises and non-profits face really important and basic issues, critical for individuals and for society.

Currently we can realize clearly how technology (especially mobile) has evolved much faster than the satisfaction of basic and vital problems of many people in the world. It’s time to change the focus and apply this cheap, ubiquitous technology now in developing countries to solve their most pressing challenges.

What is 2012 going to bring for Frogtek?

A lot of work, many challenges… and hopefully many success stories where our solution has helped improve the lives of our shopkeepers.

What has been the most exciting mobile development in 2011?

For us the most exciting stuff happening at global market level has been seeing how Android is starting to reach emerging markets and noticing how tablets may be a new, incredible platform for our products.

DoubleDutch are described on CrunchBase as “the category leader for geo-social productivity apps for the enterprise. DoubleDutch HYVE is a suite of social, location-aware mobile apps designed to help organizations become more transparent, data-driven, and productive.” Read their full CrunchBase profile here.

Please tell us a bit about Double Dutch, how you’re using mobile to ‘change the way that people work’ and the different products in your suite.

We think the world is rapidly becoming “mobile first” – and that the primary way people will consume, share, and even publish content will be via their mobile device. This shift towards mobile is well under way on the consumer side, and the workplace is not far behind.

The app that we are most excited about is something we are calling a CRM replacement. It basically rethinks what a CRM is capable of when armed with all the contextual information that a smartphone provides. We will be formally taking the wraps off this product in mid October.

You’ve worked with some fantastic clients like Cisco, Adobe and TED, can you tell us a bit about each of those projects?

Yes, we are lucky to have amazing, early adopter clients that are willing to try things that haven’t been done before. TED has been a joy to work with and has been very aggressive in trying experimental features like geofencing (for a Wikipedia article on geofencing, click here). Cisco is using our software both within their events group, as well as with their Asia PAC sales group and is really pushing the envelope in mobile sales apps. Adobe has done a lot of neat things with game mechanics using our platform in the context of a conference to enable networking. HP is another one of our customers who has been extremely innovative.

The initial buzz around smartphones has largely been based around consumers. What is your view of how mobile is going to change business?

Consumers are called employees during the day. It’s the same people, and those people are more and more using the same smartphones at work that they do at home. We feel that this whole Consumerization of IT movement is being driven by people who are coming to expect a certain level of user experience based on their use of consumer apps and devices, and aren’t finding the same quality at work. This is an opportunity for companies like us, and a risk for the incumbents.

What are the most innovative uses of mobile in business that you have come across?

Geofencing for CRM. Stay tuned.

What three bits of advice would you give large brands on incorporating mobile into their business?

1) Start from scratch – don’t just port your website. 2) Think hard about choosing Native over HTML5, if mobile is a crucial differentiator for you. Native end user experience is better. 3) Take cues from the best mobile, consumer apps.

What is 2012 going to bring for Double Dutch?

Growth! We are seeing 40-50% quarter over quarter growth, and 2012 will be about scaling our small scrappy team, into a larger, scrappy team.

What has been the most exciting mobile development in 2011?

The stunning collapse of BlackBerry, and the stunning rise of Android.

We caught up with the CEO of the smart-apparel organisation Innovalley to discuss his views on his organisation and on how mobile technology can change our lives. Innovalley’s company profile on CrunchBase: “Innovalley is a California-based company that combines the latest technologies with fashion design to create smart apparel.” (read the full profile here)

Innovalley is the result of the merger of four different partners. Can you tell us how the organisation came together and what it’s all about?

Innovalley is an innovation company focused on smart apparel that was founded by Xavier Verdaguer, Diego Paredes and Ariadna Mateu. They came up with the idea and involved our previous companies (Blinds Consulting -a software development company owned by Xavier Verdaguer- and Haiku Studio -an innovation&design studio owned by Diego Paredes and Ariadna Mateu) in the project.

They had experience in developing innovative software products, but they knew we needed a lot of research to develop new textile materials, flexible electronics and clothing prototyping. This is the reason why they looked for two other partners to cover these areas. After a round of meetings, Cetemmsa, a technological center, and Cooked, a clothing brand from Barcelona, got on board as strategic partners.

Innovalley has its own management team, independent from these four companies, but relies on their support. Being backed by these partners has allowed Innovalley to move really fast and to prototype easily.

'The Artist' bag from Innovalley

Your website places an emphasis on research and development – how far down the production and distribution chain do you intend to take your products?

We have a clear B2B strategy: that means that we come up with patented innovative concepts and then we co-design and co-develop the products with existing footwear and clothing companies. Therefore, our main revenues come from licensing programs and revenue sharing agreements with brands. This is the way we can focus on what we’re good at and the brands can use the power of their market recognition and distribution channels.

On the other hand, we have a Labstore (online store) on our site where we sell limited editions of our firsts beta-products, to test them and get results and feedback from users.

Tell us about your existing products and why they are game-changers.

We have identified 3 of the most advanced wearable technologies (sensors&actuators, photovoltaics and lighting) and have designed, developed and prototyped products for each area:

- Youshine, a collection of laptop bags with textile solar cells that charge electronic devices in an eco-friendly way

- GPShoes, an interaction/navigation system that naturally increases the amount of information the users get from their surroundings by synchronizing shoes and smartphones

- BCN2, a smart sweatshirt that incorporates a textile display which synchronizes with the user’s cell phone to show tweets and all kind of dynamic content.

The technology that we’ve developed to interact from the smartphone to the actuators/dynamic display is reusable for a lot of different application. We are continuously talking to brands to come up with different ways to package the technology and solve customer needs.

Where do you see smartphones and mobile technology fitting in to your business and what are the most exciting mobile technologies in existence today?

Smartphones are an essential part of our solutions. We understand clothing and accessories as a peripheral for some of the existing smartphone services, creating new ways to interact and, ultimately, better user experiences.

Smartphones today incorporate amazing technologies. We especially like geolocation and radio-frequency communication (like the coming Bluetooth Low Energy and NFC). Most of our solutions use accessible information based on the user location and create a new way to interact with it: for example, you can project the number of miles you have run on your sweatshirt instead of just tracking them on your smartphone.

What is the future for ‘smart apparel’ as you see it?

We envision a future where we all will be wearing tech-enabled clothing that is synchronized with an intelligent unit (maybe it’s not a smartphone anymore, but just a 3G card). This interaction will provide the user with new capabilities, like automatic temperature regulation or information projection. But we see the technology as a transparent element to the user’s eyes.

What is coming up in 2012 for Innovalley?

2012 is a very important year for Innovalley since it’s going to be our market consolidation. We expect to launch the GPShoes and the BCN2 with 2 of the brands with whom we’re currently negotiating.

The wearable technologies we’re using are becoming more accessible and reliable. This is going to be a key point to convince brands to invest in them and accelerate the market penetration.

What would your ideal collaboration/partner be for a future product?

The textile sector is rapidly changing. Some clothing and footwear companies are struggling due to the increase of raw material prices and the aggressive competition in Asia. We believe that technology is a tremendous trend in our society and can help brands differentiate their existing products from competitor’s.

Our ideal partner is a well-known brand that wants to take the leap and integrate some of our technologies in their existing products to reformulate their value proposition.

The MoBank Group are delighted to announce a new partnership with the payments service provider WorldPay. The partnership will make MoPowered, The MoBank Group’s secure mobile commerce system available to all merchants using the WorldPay payments gateway, providing a one-stop-shop for merchants seeking to trade through mobile.

The partnership will allow WorldPay customers to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by mobile commerce, allowing them to generate new revenues while providing their customers with greater choice and flexibility.

Mobile commerce is growing rapidly, as more consumers use their mobile to make online purchases. Recent research conducted by WorldPay* found that nearly a quarter of consumers currently use their mobile for shopping, with this figure reaching 50% among iPhone users. This trend is set to increase, with more smartphones sold in the fourth quarter of 2010 than PCs, and recent reports indicating that users spend more time using mobile applications each day than accessing the internet using a desktop computer or laptop.

The MoPowered platform allows brands to have a fully developed mobile strategy with an application on all the major operating systems and a mobile-optimised website. WorldPay customers that implement the platform will enjoy the same high levels of security through the mobile channel as through their e-commerce platform, as the system is fully compatible with 3D security schemes such as VerifiedByVisa® and MasterCard SecureCode®. The MoBank Group have extensive experience of working with major brands on maximising conversions through the mobile channel.

“Our customers are excited about the potential for mobile commerce to transform their businesses. WorldPay is developing a best in class set of solutions for businesses off all shapes and sizes. MoBank’s MoPowered system has been tried and tested by some major Ecommerce brands and we look forward to working together to bring the benefits of mobile commerce to many more businesses” says Shane Happach, Chief Commercial Officer at WorldPay.

Dominic Keen, CEO of The MoBank Group, commented “We are delighted to partner with WorldPay to help all their merchants build revenues by processing secure transactions though the mobile channel. Mobile commerce is an essential part of multi-channel retail. The market has grown by 25% in the past six months and Gartner Research has predicted that it could account for up to 12.5% of e-commerce transactions by 2013. Optimising websites and creating native applications for smartphones is already a necessity for merchants as 20 million people connected to the web from their mobile phone in the UK in the last year.”
